Is there any upstream work going on towards getting current AOSP running on this hardware?
As far as I know, there is no such plan. Our plan to upgrade to Android Pie following Rockchip’s schedule.
Well that’s pretty disappointing. I was hoping that there would be some more initiative than that. Rockchip is well known for never upgrading.

Rockchip still update their rk3126 chip to android pie, which is release in 2014. RK3288 is released in 2013 and it will be update to Android Pie. I think what you are blaming is the vendor, not Rockchip.
