Linux Kernel compile for Lubuntu

Hi,
I need to update the HiKey970 kernel because I need to change default configuration and apply some patches.
On documentation I found however only instruction for Android http://mirror.lemaker.org/Hikey970%20Development%20Guide.pdf

Can you explain to me what to do instead for Lubuntu?
I just need to clone the repository, compile it with make and copy the image instead of the one present under the boot folder on the board?
I need also ramdisk.img and mkbootimg like Android?
