Orange Pi i96: MIPI CSI

Why does the Orange Pi i96 report as being limited to supporting cameras 2mp or below? Why would they even use a MIPI interface for the kind of data rates. surely at this resolution you would just use a parallel interface?

I was looking for a great IOT board for images 8mp but don’t need video and this looked great until I noticed the 2mp constraint. Any thoughts?

I’m not a MIPI CSI interconnect expert but I assume this is an hardware phy limitation for 2MP video stream which correspond to a 1080p/30fps (seems pretty fair). I don’t see any limitation to transfer non-live picture with higher resolution if the sensor is able to capture it, this should just take more time on the bus. If someone has more knowledge about this…
