No boot with newer kernel releases

Hi, for the past days I tried to install the latest kernel release on my board using this guide.
But I can’t get it to boot. The board originally came with a 4.x kernel and buster installed, and worked fine if I switch back nothing works.
Things I did:

  • Update the boot-manager with via the script in the rescue package.
  • Follow the board recovery(for whatever reason)
  • Use a slightly older 5.x kernel
  • Use a way older 5.x kernel
  • Boot the board without any attachments
  • Build my own kernel
  • Boot with $fastboot boot kernel.img

The last thing works, but the board crashes after the login manager and turns off without error when not using the developer image. Whats also strange is that the board sometimes very rarely boots without any change.
I am running out of ideas to get the thing working. Are there any tips or tricks? Should I try the UFS provisioning?. Thank you.
P.S. I am using the emmc storage not an SD card. And the board was recently bought from arrow.

I managed to boot it once and maybe found the issue: in journalctl it says.
Firmware Bug: Kernel image misaligned at boot please fix your bootloader.
How do I fix it ?

You probably need to update the bootlader. I think the original bootlader worked up to kernel 5.7.xx but I had to update the bootloader to bool later kanel releases. The new bootloader is backward compatible, and can boot both 5.x and 4.x.

Yes, that should have updated the bootlader.
We have tried a few variations of 5.x kernels (5.7, 5.10, 5.13, and 5.15). Now I noticed that you are trying to boot 5.15, which is the one we have not been able to boot (may be booted once or twice but usually doesn’t boot), and gave up on it, at least for now.

FYI - we have been trying to update to 5.x because of this issue in 4.14. We were mostly working on 5.13 but still it was not good enough for our production use. We make video processing products and with 5.x, capturing video from MIPI isn’t stable – drops a few framed every now and then.
