AFAIK, Hikey960 SoC cannot directly boot images from sdcard or USB stick. The bootROM needs to load image from EMMC to SRAM, after that it’s flexible to load images from USB/EMMC/Sdcard; so the bootROM has decided the EMMC is mandatory.

Nothing changed here? Really no way to boot from SD card?

It really depends if you are using the AOSP firmware (officially supported) or the UEFI firmware (which I think is just unreleased snapshots). @Mani tested the later fairly recently:

Hi @Anon I have just tested the SD booting on HiKey960 board and it works fine with the latest snapshot image pointed by you. It is recommended to use the new UEFI firmware for this. I am also interested in using HDMI and USB hardware with Debian. I understand that Kernel 4.15 does not support this hardware.
