Not sure about the 8.1 branches (the report in the thread cited ends by noting the graphics performance problems were due to a confused USB port rather than a lack of acceleration… it is likely the original comment about no acceleration is incorrect). For sure there is a acceleration in the master branch.
I start building the master, I’ll give you feedback 
@danielt , @justin_h83 : The confusion comes from the fact that the STABLE branches have no acceleration (which might be reparable by pulling in certain elements of MASTER), but that also the USB bug may come into play and needs to be considered before concluding that acceleration is not working.
I just finish building the master, and I can say that still some problem with graphics.
I’ll post a video tomorrow, with all details.
@doitright I didn’t follow the discussion about the usb bug, maybe it’s the real cause.

There are some graphical artifacts in master, yes. There is a bug filed regarding this, https://bugs.96boards.org/show_bug.cgi?id=575 – but its been a while since its been updated.
